EDUCATION IN DELHI

Delhi has 7 universities besides several other schools and institutions of medical, engineering, professional and vocational courses. Over the years it has grown into the favourite haunt for students when it come to higher education, right from universities and colleges that offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses to specialised degree from autonomous institutions.

The 'Delhi Edu' section is a humble initiation from MSAD, put up with an aim to provide some idea on the education scene in the Capital to our members, and also to those who seek to study here.

Here you will find important details like courses offered and selection criteria.

We aim to include very soon other information like seats available, institution ratings. And also all private institutions that we have missed out now.

DELHI UNIVERSITY

Delhi University was established on 1 Feb, 1922 as a unitary and residential university by an Act of parliament with a nucleus of three colleges, two faculties and about 750 students in the university. Now it has grown over the years into one of the largest universities of India. It is a central university; the president of India being the visitor. Today the university is made up of four campuses, fifteen faculties, eighty-two departments, and seventy-eight colleges spread all over Delhi. It has about 2,00,000 enrolled students, with approximately 15,000 making up the post graduate students body and almost 90,000 are enrolled in non-formal education programs. About 1100 foreign students representing over fifty countries attend the university providing a contemporary global perspective

 

COLLEGE ADMISSION SCHEDULE

The Delhi University has prepared a tentative schedule for admissions to various under - graduate courses for the coming session. The dates below can be used for reference:

  • Start of receipt of application forms for-admission :- June 6

  • Last date for receipt of application forms in colleges:- June20

  • Notification of first admission list by college :- June 25

  • Admission and payment of fees:- June 26 to 28 upto 1 pm.

  • Notification-of second admission list by colleges:- June 29

  • Admission and payment of fees :- June 30 to July 3

  • Notification of third admission list :- July 4

  • Admission and payment of fees:- July 5 to 7upto-1pm.

  • Notification of fourth admission list :- July 9

  • Admission and payment of fees:- July 10 to12 upto 1pm.

  • The admissions will be made till August 14, subject to availability of seats.

The date for admission to non-formal educational cell external candidate and school of correspondence studies ) are as follows:

  • Start of receipt of application :-June 26

  • Last date for receipt of application - Oct.31

  • Last date for receipt of application with late fee with approval from the vice chancellor :-nov.30.

According to the schedule, the dates for registration of scheduled castes/tribes Children and widow of those belonging to the armed forces including paramilitary personnel killed/disabled in action/on duty are:

  • Distribution and receipt of forms at one of the registration centers viz. North campus, south campus, B.R Ambedkar college, Rajdhani College - June 6 to 20.

  • Notification of the first provisional list (55 per cent and above) and issue of provisional admission slip-- July 6.

 

 

M.Sc. ENTRANCE TEST NOTICE - 2001

IMPORTANT:

  • A. Entrance Test for admission to the following six P.G. Courses is being conducted to fill up 50% seats of the total intake on the basis of merit in the Entrance Test.

  • B. Remaining 50% seats will be filled up on the basis of merit based on marks obtained by the candidates in the respective B.Sc. (Hons.) Course Examination from University of Delhi only (not through Entrance Test). They are, however, advised to make application for admission through Entrance Test as well. Minimum Eligibility requirements for category (B) are contained in the Bulletin of Information.


MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY FOR ENTRANCE TEST

M.Sc.: PHYSICS :
B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics from University of Delhi or an Examination recognised as equivalent thereto with 50% or above marks in Physics or B.Sc. (Gen.) from University of Delhi or an Examination recognised as equivalent thereto or any Branch of Science or Engineering with 60% or above marks in the aggregate and 60% or above marks in Physics.

M.Sc.: CHEMISTRY, BOTANY, ZOOLOGY AND GEOLOGY:
B.Sc. (Hons.) in subject concerned (i.e. Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Geology) from University of Delhi or an 'Examination recognised as equivalent thereto with 50% or above marks in aggregate & 50% or above marks in subject concerned or B.Sc. (Gen.) from University of Delhi or an Examination recognised as equivalent thereto with 60% or above marks in the aggregate and 60% or above marks in the subject concerned.

M.Sc. ANTHROPOLOGY :
B.Sc. (Hons.) Anthropology or B.Sc. (Hons.)/ B.A. (Hons.) in certain Subjects from University of Delhi or from any other University recognised as equivalent thereto with 50% or above marks in aggregate & 50% or above marks in the main subject or B.Sc. (Gen.) from University of Delhi or an Examination recognised as equivalent thereto with 60% or above marks in the aggregate and 60% or above marks in the subject concerned.

NOTE: Reservation of seats and relaxation of marks in the minimum eligibility for certain categories as per norms. Those appearing or have appeared at the aforesaid qualifying examination can also apply.

HOW TO APPLY: Bulletin of Information and Application Form containing all the details are available from the office of the Deputy Registrar (Science), Faculty of Science, Room No. 9, New Administrative Building, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 on all working days between 10.30 A.M. to 3.30 P.M. on cash payment of Rs. 50/-.

FOR OBTAINING APPLICATION FORM BY POST: On remitting a crossed Bank Draft of Rs. 50/- for each course in favour of the Registrar, University of Delhi, payable at State Bank of India, Service Branch, New Delhi (Code No. 7687). A self-addressed envelope of size (25 cms x 17 cms) with postage stamp worth Rs. 12/- affixed should also be enclosed with the request to be addressed as indicated above. Draft must be purchased only from the branches of State Bank of India.

Selection:
Selection for admission to all seats (except for NRI/NRI sponsored seats in self financing institutions will be done through a Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the University for each programme or a group of programmes. Category/ Reservation; There is a categorisation of free seats. payment seats, region wise allocation, reservation of SC/ST physically handicapped, children/wards of defence personnel as well as some seats earmarked for NRI/NRI sponsored/ foreign candidates.

Fee structure:

Establishment:
The 'Indira Gandhi National Open University' was established in 1985 to democratise higher education. The university has been a pioneer in Digtance Education and hold the award for the Centre of Excellence in Distance Education of the Commonwealth of Learning in 1993. IGNOU has close to 600000 students with extremely varied profiles, spread throughout. The university is serviced by an efficient and effective networking for 44 Regional (5 of which are army command centers) and 627 Study Centers, all over India. Establishment:
In responding to Gandhiji's call to boycott the British Raj a group of non-conformist Muslims established Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920 at Aligarh. In 1962 the UGC gave Jamia a 'deemed' university status and on 26th December 1988, Jamia Millia Islamia became a central university by an act of the Parliament. Today, Jamia Millia Islamia gives integrated education from nursery to Ph.D. It offers certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate degree courses in many subjects.

Objective:
The goal the architect of Jamia was to familiarise the youth of the country with their cultural heritage and not to compromise it for the sake of alien cultures.

Establishment:
Jawahar Lal Nehru University was establish in 1969. The basic academic units of the University are not single discipline departments but multidisciplinary Schools of Studies. Each School is made up of a number of Centres. A Centre is engaged in inter-disciplinary programmes of research and teaching. The JNU being an all India University, the medium of instruction for all programmes of study is English barring the Language courses. 2 Indian Forests Service Examination: Students with Science background can appear this Examination. Age between 18 to 28 (relaxations for SC/ST). Application forms are issued around January every year.

3 Combined Defense Service Examination: UPSC conduct this examination twice in a year. Application form is issued in the month of November/ December and again in May / June. The examination is conducted twice in a year. Application form is issued in the month of April and September of each year. Eligibility: National Defence Academy ( NDA) Army and Air Force wings are 10+2. For Navy Wing of NDA and Naval Academy (Executive Branch) 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics as a subject is required. Students waiting for results can also apply.

5. Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination: This examination is conducted once in a year. Application form is distributed in the month of January /February. Eligibility: Any candidate who is below the age of 20 years and not less than 16 years and who have completed 10+2 Examination is eligible for the Examination. Students whose results are awaited also can apply.

6. Combined Medical Services Examination: This examination is conducted once in a year. Application is usually invited in the month of September/October. The candidates should be below 30 years (relaxation for SC/ST) with MBBS degree. The selected candidates are appointed as: 1 Assistant Divisional Medical Officers in Railways. 2. Junior Scale Posts in Central Services. 3. Junior Scale Posts in Indian Ordinance Factories Health Services. 4. Medical Officers in Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

7. Engineering Service Examination: This examination is held every year. This application form is distributed in the month of March. This examination has fur categories: a) Civil. b) Mechanical. c) Electrical d) Electronics & Tele-communication engineering.

8. Indian Economic Service /lndian Statical Service examination: This examination is held once in a year. Eligibility: Any candidate with static /mathematics/economics can apply for Indian statical service. Application form is distributed in the month of February. The age limit for the candidate is 21-28 years.

9. Geologist Examination: Advertisement for this examination is usually made in the month of July. The examination is held once in a year. Eligibility: the candidate must have Master degree in Geology or Applied geology or Marine geology. The candidate should be 21-30 years of age.

National Education System for Testing for Selection to Engineering Colleges Patterned on the lines of international examinations like the SAT, GRE, GMAT and GATE, the human resource development (HRD) ministry has decided to organise a common entrance examination called the 'National Education System for Testing (NEST)'for admission to Engineering disciplines. This examination will most likely be conducted by educational consultants, a public sector undertaking attached to the HRD ministry Students will be awarded a percentile score, indicating the relative ability of a student, which will be used as a basis to prepare merit lists at the national and state levels. However, seat allotments will continue to be made by the institutes concerned, which can use the NEST scores for admission purposes. The institutes may incorporate any other element in their admission process, including a second test for a specified number from among the qualified candidates. It is estimated that the number of students taking these examinations may be unto 25 lakhs by the year.

Bachelor's Degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education or equivalent in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics with at least55% marks.Selection to all the courses is made through written test.

    Career in Merchant Navy is very rewarding as well as adventurous. Merchant Navy deals in transportation of goods and passengers in sea. Radio Officers, Navigating Officers and Marine Engineers hold important positions. Radio Officers are responsible for sending and receiving messages from the sea to the land and vice versa. Navigation officers ensure navigation of the ship along with the passengers and cargo. While Marine Engineers are responsible for sound functioning of the ship and its various installations.
